Five Must-Read 'Deadpool' Stories To Prep You For His Solo Movie

In the comic book universe, Wade Wilson was a hired assassin with his own code of honor and ethics. After being diagnosed with terminal cancer, he volunteered for an experiment that gave him some of the genetic traits of Wolverine. Now, Wade has super-human strength, incredible agility, and an even-more-powerful healing factor that makes him immortal. However, the side effects included hideously scarred skin and a short-circuited brain, turning the sarcastic assassin into a borderline insane, attention-deficient warrior called Deadpool, the “Merc With A Mouth.”

Everyone's seen Ryan Reynolds strut his stuff as Wade in "X-Men Origins: Wolverine," and now, as our late-breaking scoop announced yesterday, we'll be seeing him reprise the role in a "Deadpool" solo movie. with plenty of stories out there to show you just what makes Deadpool a fan-favorite character, we've put together a list of some of the highlights from the comic book history of Marvel's mutant mercenary.

DEADPOOL LIMITED SERIES II: Deadpool had made a few appearances as a wise-cracking mercenary since debuting in 1991, but in this 1994 miniseries writer Mark Waid gave us the first inkling that, deep down, the immortal assassin actually longed to find a higher purpose and still had some form of morality within him.

In this story, Deadpool begins to doubt the life he’s leading and also finds himself feeling genuine affection for someone else for the first time in years (namely, Syrin of X-Force). This mini served as a launching pad for the merc’s later ongoing series.


DEADPOOL #1-25: In his first ongoing series, Deadpool is quickly recruited by an intergalactic law firm that believes he is destined to save the planet from total destruction. Despite his objections, these cosmic businessmen are determined to help the “Merc with a Mouth” face the fact that he is, at heart, a decent person so that he can prepare for a fate he doesn’t feel he deserves.

This 25-issue run written by Joe Kelly is what made the character a favorite among many fans and redefined exactly what he’s all about.

CABLE & DEADPOOL, VOL. 1 -- IF LOOKS COULD KILL: For years, the Merc with a Mouth and Cable, son of the X-Men’s Cyclops, have been enemies. But in this adventure, circumstances force them to become comrades and Deadpool finds himself drawn into Cable’s schemes to save humanity from itself.

A whole new direction in life for the Merc with a Mouth and a hilarious twist on the buddy comedy concept.

CABLE & DEADPOOL, VOL. 3 -- THE HUMAN RACE: Deadpool investigates a murder mystery (in his own subtle way) and then has to do some dimension-hopping when Cable is lost in a parallel reality.

Most significant of all perhaps, this story involves Deadpool having some of his damaged brain fixed, allowing him more clarity and a brighter potential for becoming a true hero. If only he’d just shut up and appreciate it.


DEADPOOL VS. THE MARVEL UNIVERSE: Man, this story has it all. Time travel, terrorists, super-villains. guest appearances by everyone from Captain America to Wolverine to the Fantastic Four. And, in the middle of it all, the Merc with a Mouth and his new faithful sidekick Bob, Agent of HYDRA.

Deadpool Co-Creator Rob Liefeld Explains The Good And Bad Of His 'X-Men Origins: Wolverine' Debut

Rob Liefeld has been around the comic book industry long enough to see some of its most famous characters created on paper and re-created on film. This year, one of his own made its big-screen debut when Ryan Reynolds played Deadpool in "X-Men Origins: Wolverine." (And Liefeld's original team series "Youngblood" might not be far behind in making its debut, too.)

MTV News chatted up the Image Comics co-founder to get his reaction to Deadpool's first appearance on the big screen, and to find out what he hopes gets left behind when the character moves on to his own solo film.

"I have a scale, with worst possible interpretation of a character being Halle Berry as Catwoman, to best possible interpretation of a character being Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, Ron Perlman as Hellboy, Patrick Stewart as Professor X, or Christian Bale as Batman," Liefeld told MTV News. "I would put Deadpool, in this inception, much closer to the side where they got it right."

Liefeld praised the movie's version of Deadpool as being true to his initial vision for the wisecracking mercenary -- and explained why the character audiences saw at the end of the film isn't actually that far off.

"When I created Deadpool, the entire backstory that was pitched was that he was the junk left over from a bad Weapon X experiment," Liefeld explained. "When I look at the film, there's no reason he can't go and become that guy I created."

However, that's not to say that director Gavin Hood and the film's writers got off without any criticism from Liefeld.

"Look, katanas coming out of the hand? Not a fan. But you get over it," he admitted. "Do I believe Deadpool will be shooting optic blasts out of his eyes down the road? No, I don't believe he will."

It’s the dream of every comic-book fan, whether they’ll admit it or not. The chance to become your favorite character, impact his story, and help determine his future.

Now, after years of lobbying for the role and finally being rewarded with a huge opening for his debut in the recent “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” Ryan Reynolds has complete control over the character of Wade Wilson. Recently, he clued us in on some of the characters he expects to see in the “Deadpool” spinoff movie -- but, as he told us, the best part of the gig is the hands-on approach that he’s been given in developing it.

“I love it, because I get to be involved,” Reynolds said of his role in the fast-tracked development of a Deadpool spin-off film. “And I’m such a huge fan of the character.”

Currently, Reynolds and the studio are seeking a director and writer(s) for the film, and listening to plenty of ideas about where Wade’s story should go. Fortunately for the die-hard fans, Reynolds has no intention of letting the film stray too far from its comic origins.

“I get to be the authentication police, in a weird way,” grinned Reynolds, who will show his versatility this month in the refreshingly-decent romantic comedy “The Proposal” June 19th. “To their credit -- the studio’s credit -- they want to make an authentic ‘Deadpool’ movie; they want to make it as close to the source material as possible.”

With that in mind, the actor told us that he and the studio have already agreed to some key terms. “He’s going to be the Merc with the Mouth, [we’re going to give] all those answers that everyone wants,” Reynolds explained. “He’s going to have the scarred-up face, he’s going to be in the suit -- and, it’s going to be incredible.”

So, as the actor and his studio begin assembling their team, Reynolds is bringing his “authentication police” skills to finding similar-minded people who can tell the fractured tale of the deadly mutant. “Right now, it’s just a question of trying to figure out what is the spine of the story,” Ryan said of their current discussions. “Who is the villain? What does Wade and/or Deadpool want?”

“And how do you tell that story? Are we going to see flashbacks to his old life, flash-forwards, present-day?” an obviously enthusiastic Reynolds added. “We’re just trying to figure that stuff out.”

David Goyer to Direct Magneto

Variety is reporting that David Goyer will direct Magneto, the "X-Men" spinoff in development from 20th Century Fox and Marvel Studios that centers on the villain played in the original trilogy by Ian McKellen. After the first three "X-Men" films grossed more than $1 billion worldwide, Fox and Marvel hatched the spinoff program. Magneto will be the second such movie to go into production. First up is Wolverine, a David Benioff-scripted film that will star Hugh Jackman as the steel-clawed mutant; Fox and Marvel will set a director shortly on that pic.

Which X-Men Movie is Next?

With X-Men Origins: Wolverine having already pulled in $356.2 million worldwide, and both a sequel and Deadpool spin-off in the works, we were wondering what the status of the other "X-Men" spin-offs was.

Today, we got a chance to talk to David Goyer, who's executive producing ABC's upcoming "Flash Forward" and whose The Unborn hits DVD and Blu-ray on July 7. Goyer has been attached to write and direct Magneto, but he's not sure if that will move forward before X-Men: First Class.

"There have been some preliminary discussions," he told us about Magneto, adding, "I think, at Fox, they're trying to decide if making a young X-Men film makes the most sense next, does making a 'Magneto' make the most sense next. They're just trying to decide internally who's next up."

So it sounds like there's a face-off between Wolverine, Deadpool, Magneto and First Class at Fox right now. Who do you think will win and get the green light first?

X-Men & Spider-Man round up.

I’ve been a Spider-Man fan for as long as I can remember, the character has appealed to me for so long that I forget exactly why I liked him in the first place. At this point in my life the character is just cool and that’s enough for me. Leave it to Marvel comics to come up with a story that reminds me a little of why I thought Spidey was cool in the first place, along with a bunch of guys calling themselves the X-Men you might have heard of them.

If you’ve read my columns before you know two things a) that I love breaking the rules and talking directly to you the reader and b) I have an issue with retconning characters. This short four issue series does some retconning, but they do it in a way that works. The best part of this series is how seamless it is. There’s nothing like a well planned, smooth delivering comic book story, and this book series is it.

What this series sets out to accomplish is to bridge the gap between the worlds of the X-Men and Spider-Man by suggesting that the X-Men’s trials with Mr. Sinister have had a major impact on Spider-Man as well. The way they go about this is very simple, they suggest a relationship that will bring the various players closer together. That relationship is the one that exists between Sinister himself and Kraven the Hunter.

The first book goes all the way back to the early days of the X-Men, with the original team. That’s right it’s Cyclops and his team catching up with Peter and Gwen Stacy. At this point the team has met Spider-Man at least once and is pulled into action when Kraven labels Peter as a mutant on national TV. This prompts the X-Men to seek Spidey out before someone like Magneto does. I really enjoyed how they set this story up, how they made the scenario make sense in context with what was going on in comics at the time.

Still in the first book Kraven is trying to track Spider-Man while the X-Men are trying to seek him out and warn him of the dangers he may be facing as a mutant. There are neet little touches thrown in throughout the story, like the fact that Peter, Flash and Harry are hanging out with MJ and Gwen at the coffee bean, a place that Harry will one day buy according to the current Spider-Man storyline. The two groups start to intermingle when the X-Men arrive on the scene in their street clothes trying to find Spider-Man. The two groups almost come to blows over the ladies when Kraven and the Blob crash the party.

Of course a huge fight breaks out but the heroes prevail. The first question I had was what the heck was the Blob doing teamed up with Kraven, unfortunately you have to wait a little while to get the answer to that.

The first book ends with Kraven delivering the DNA of the first five X-Men to Mr. Sinister, this is where I have a slight problem with the story. Hasn’t Sinister been trying to get said DNA for years? How could he need that material if he’s had it since the beginning? The story tries to answer that question itself as the book jumps ahead a good chunk of time.

The second book picks up some time around Mutant Massacre and the death of Kraven the Hunter. The X-Men have a whole new look at this point and Storm (in all her Mohawk glory) is the team’s leader. This is a tight squeeze story wise but the writers figure it out admirably. The team is informed by Spidey that Kraven kept extensive files on all of the original X-Men. He also has a lead to where they might be able to find Mr. Sinister. For those of you who don’t remember it was the Marauders that were behind the Mutant Massacre in the first place, and their leader was Mr. Sinister. Spidey (clad in his classic Black costume) and his info lead the X-Men right to the Marauders. Remember that this is comics, a fight ensues that leads the X-Men and Spider-Man to a small room hidden in the Morlock Tunnels. In this room the team finds clones of the original five X-Men, all dead. Failed experiments of Mr. Sinister.
At the end of the book we find Sinister himself visiting the grave of Kraven and letting him know that his own DNA will be put to good use.

The next chapter covers the Howard Mackie run on Spider-Man. Say what you will about the clone saga, but it did have one bright spot in the form of Ben Reilly. Not only is Ben playing the part of Spider-Man but the story features everyone’s favorite symbiote Carnage. This issue kind of rushes by and wraps up nicely. I get the feeling that this territory wasn’t exactly where the creative staff wanted to hang out (who could blame them) so they get their business done and get the heck out of dodge. The best part of this issue is the dialogue that reminds us what Marvel comics were like in the 90’s. Remember that you have to take the good with the bad.

The fourth and final book of this trip down memory lane catches us up to the modern times. Peter is back in the webs and Wolverine has metal claws again. This issue plays up the fact that Wolverine is in more books than you can shake a stick at. It really makes for great back and forth between the characters in the onset. This issue also ties back into the end of the first issue where we saw Kraven get propositioned for his own DNA. Long story short Sinister has managed to make a clone of Kraven the Hunter and the clone is even more dangerous than the original.

The fight that ensues doesn’t take too long, but it reveals a great deal. What makes this book series great is how well they worked their way to the conclusion. Xraven, the clone of Kraven is a formidable opponent to the heroes and could work as a villain in the future. How the story ends should work for you, unless you don’t like overly happy endings, considering that the whole series is rather light hearted then the ending shouldn’t be too sugary sweet.

The artwork is first rate and consistent throughout, the series comes close to retcon hell without crossing the line, and the way the characters are treated works out really well. All in all a great series for fans of either Spider-Man or the X-Men, you should be able to find every issue in a comic shop near you.

Critical Reaction

Wesley Morris of the Boston Globe praised the X-Men films as "more than a cash-guzzling wham-bang Hollywood franchise... these three movies sport philosophy, ideas, a telethon-load of causes, and a highly elastic us-versus-them allegory." Morris praised X-Men: The Last Stand for "put[ting] the heroes of a mighty summer blockbuster in a rare mortal position. Realism at this time of year? How unorthodox!" Roger Ebert gave the films good reviews, but criticized them because "there are just plain too many mutants, and their powers are so various and ill-matched that it's hard to keep them all on the same canvas." Mick LaSalle of the San Francisco Chronicle, criticized the films' themes, saying "The pretensions take the form of the central metaphor that compares mutants to people of extraordinary, groundbreaking talent. That metaphor is bogus... The vision at the heart of X-Men - of a golden Utopia in which humans live side by side with mutants - is absurd."

The first two films were highly praised due to their cerebral tone, but when director Bryan Singer left, many criticized his successor Brett Ratner. Colin Colvert of the Star Tribune felt "Bryan Singer's sensitivity to [the discrimination themes] made the first two X-Men films surprisingly resonant and soulful for comic-based summer extravaganzas... Singer is adept at juggling large casts of three-dimensional characters, Ratner makes shallow, unimaginative bang-ups." James Berardinelli felt, "X-Men: The Last Stand isn't as taut or satisfying as X-Men 2, but it's better constructed and better paced than the original X-Men. The differences in quality between the three are minor, however; despite the change in directors, there seems to be a single vision." David Denby of The New Yorker praised "the liquid beauty and the poetic fantasy of Singer’s work", but called Ratner's film "a crude synthesizer of comedy and action tropes."

The X-Men films received good reviews from fans of the comic books, but there was criticism of the large cast, and the limited screentime for all of them. Richard George of IGN praised the depictions of Wolverine, Professor X, Magneto, Jean Grey and William Stryker, and was also pleased with the portrayals of Mystique, Beast and Nightcrawler. However, George felt many of the younger X-Men characters, such as Rogue and Iceman, were "adjectiveless teenager[s]", and was disappointed by Cyclops and Storm's characterizations. He observed the filmmakers were "big fans of silent henchmen", due to the small roles of the various villainous mutants; such as Lady Deathstrike. George felt that the success of X-Men "paved the way for other hits like the Spider-Man series, Fantastic Four, V for Vendetta and Singer's own adaptation of Superman." Spider-Man director Sam Raimi said he was a fan of the series, particularly Singer's films. Film historian Kim Newman also tonally compared Batman Begins to Singer's films.

X-Men Deadpool

Deadpool is a comic book character sometimes depicted as a mercenary or antihero; he appears in books published by Marvel Comics, originally in the X-Men family of titles, but branching out into the more mainstream Marvel Universe in recent years. Created by artist Rob Liefeld and writer Fabian Nicieza, Deadpool first appeared in The New Mutants #98 (February 1991). Wizard magazine, on its list of the Top 200 Comic Book Characters of All Time, ranked Deadpool 182nd, while Empire magazine ranked him 45th.

Nicknamed the "Merc with a Mouth", Deadpool is a high-tech mercenary known for his wisecracks, black comedy, and satirical pop culture references. Like the X-Men's Wolverine, Deadpool is the product of the Canadian government's paramilitary Weapon X program, although his place of birth is unknown. After Weapon X cured his terminal cancer by implementing a regenerative "healing factor" extracted from Wolverine, Deadpool is left disfigured and mentally unstable.

Deadpool was originally an adversary of the New Mutants, later known as X-Force, appearing primarily in those titles. He soon starred in two four-issue limited series (Sins of the Past and The Circle Chase) and was given his first ongoing series in 1997. Since then, Deadpool has been a consistent publication of Marvel, though he has had several relaunches and shared a title with Cable for a period. Deadpool's comics are known for their slapstick tone and willingness to break the "fourth wall", occasionally having Deadpool address the audience directly.

Ryan Reynolds appears as Wade Wilson in the 2009 film X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and will reprise the role for an upcoming solo film.

X-Men Colossus

Colossus (Piotr Nikolaievitch Rasputin) is a fictional character, a superhero in the Marvel Comics universe. Created by writer Len Wein and illustrator Dave Cockrum, he first appeared in Giant-Size X-Men #1 (May 1975). A Russian mutant, the character is a member of the X-Men, and is by far the physically strongest X-Man. Even without his powers he still cuts a physically imposing figure standing at 7'5". Throughout the series he has been portrayed as a quiet, shy character, honest and innocent. He's now a man without a family, having lost all whom he's ever loved including his parents, brother, sister and even Kitty Pryde, his primary romantic interest. He has had a fairly consistent presence in X-Men-related comic books since his debut. Also a talented artist, he only reluctantly agrees to use his powers in combat, feeling it is his responsibility to use his abilities for the betterment of human and mutant-kind.

Daniel Cudmore portrayed the Russian superhero in X2: X-Men United and X-Men: The Last Stand. Wizard Magazine ranked Colossus the 184th best comic book character of all time, of their list of the Top 200 Comic Book Characters of All Time.

The Dark X-Men

The Dark X-Men are a Marvel Comics comic book team. They made their debut during the crossover between Dark Avengers and Uncanny X-Men written by Matt Fraction, as part of the broader Dark Reign storyline. Each member but Namor has been handpicked by Osborn for his own criminal agenda.

Publication history

At the 2009 Emerald City ComiCon, writer Matt Fraction confirmed that the Dark X-Men would not be featured in a title of their own, but would rather be featured in Uncanny X-Men during the crossover with Dark Avengers.

In an April 16 interview with Comic Book Resources, Fraction explained the whole idea behind the Dark X-Men was to create three teams; Norman Osborn's Dark Avengers, Scott Summers's X-Men and Emma Frost new "Dark" X-Men.

Comic book writer Jason Aaron stated recently that Mystique will have a short story in the Dark X-Men: The Beginning mini-series, but did not confirm whether or not she would join the team.[3] Similarly, Dark Beast is mentioned as featured in the first two issues of Dark X-Men: The Beginning, but was not confirmed as member of the Dark X-Men so far. However, both of them were actually revealed as members of the team (with Mystique impersonating Professor X) in Uncanny X-Men #513, released on July 1, 2009.

Other members of the team Fraction chose include Cloak and Dagger, neither of which have had strong ties to any of the X-Men books. "They're here presented with a chance to have their reputations exonerated and their records sealed [if they join the Dark X-Men]," explains Fraction in an interview with Marvel.com. "Osborn presents it to them as the ultimate public service, [where] they can work off their past indiscretions—[such as] Cloak's dealings with the Avengers during the [Skrull] invasion." Fraction reveals the more appealing part of Dark X-Men was to see how Cloak and Dagger react in a real superhero team scenario. Cloak and Dagger's involvement with the Dark X-Men has put their proposed miniseries on hold.

Another team member worthy of note is Mimic, who sees joining this team as chance to do some good. Writer James Asmus explained: "To actually be invited onto a team—and one working for the government, no less—gives him a vote of confidence that was sorely needed in his life. Unfortunately for Cal, he doesn't realize he didn't sign up with the good guys." The first issue of Dark X-Men: The Beginning will feature stories about Namor, Mimic and Dark Beast.
